In collaboration with the Government Economic Service (GES), the Scottish Government's Economist Group is keen to promote an awareness of economics as a career option in secondary schools.
What's the activity?
We would like to deliver 30- to 90-minute presentations to school pupils in S3 to S6 covering what economics is, what we do as economists, and how to become an economist.
Our presentations usually include an interactive session on topics such as Cost-Benefit Analysis, Game Theory, or International Trade, with confectionery prizes as rewards.
Our professional economists also touch on their daily work and career paths. Roles in the GES can vary from working on transport, housing, environment and net zero, health and social care, poverty, education, and much more. Our aim is to dispel some of the myths around economics, such as it only being about finance or business.
