A reassuring, practical session for pupils who feel stuck choosing subjects, unsure where work is heading, or worried their passion will not pay.
Instead of forcing a single decision, this talk shows how modern careers actually start: curiosity, small choices and transferable skills.
I share my route from a state school into public affairs, government policy and the automotive sector, including working in three European countries. Along the way I learned about industry, politics, energy and transport, plus the everyday skills employers value.
It is lightly interactive. Pupils use quick prompts to turn interests into skills, challenge the myth of one ‘perfect’ career, and choose one next step they can take this term: build confidence, gain experience, or practise a skill. We also touch on languages and practical, safe use of AI as tools for learning and work.
The aim is not to pick a job today, but to leave with a clearer sense of direction and a simple plan for keeping options open.
