Becoming an Economist: Career Conversations

Work Inspiration and Preparation Provided by Scottish Government

The Scottish Government's Economist Group hopes to promote an awareness of how economics is used in government to aid decision-making. The motivating factor behind this programme is to increase diversity within the profession, as economists are currently disproportionately male and privately educated.

As part of this academic year, we are keen to have 2:1 or group conversations with young people who may be interested in studying, or pursuing a career in, economics. We’ve held a handful of these sessions after having been approached by pupils looking for some careers advice, and we’ve found they worked well. Given this, we've crafted this offer so that more young people can enjoy this opportunity.

We’d plan to hold these conversations online via Microsoft Teams in an informal manner, and we’re happy to hold them for individuals or small groups. We invite those pupils interested to contact their local DYW School Coordinator who can then reach us at economist.outreach@gov.scot
